If you happen to love snakes and are interested in getting a pet snake, then there are a few things you should know. The most important thing to know is which type of snakes make the best pets. Not all breeds of snakes are suitable to keep as pets and many are extremely dangerous. Other things you will need to take into consideration is if you have children in the household, other pets such as dogs and cats, living area, etc. After you have made all these considerations and decided you still want a snake, then you will need to know it’s dietary and clean up needs.
There are plenty of types of snakes that are safe to have as pets. The core decision about what type of snake to get will depend on a few different factors.
Size is a big factor. While there are people who prefer small snakes that can stay in little terrariums, other folks want to have a big snake that they can carry wrapped around their shoulders and show off to people in the local park.
The level of care required is another issue that should be taken into consideration. Different types of snakes have different diet requirements and clean-up needs. If you don’t have lots of spare time to care for your snake, then you will probably want to get a low-maintenance breed of snake. If you have got the time to put a lot more care into having a snake then there are several nice snake breeds that require more time and effort.
Consideration of the typical life span of the snake should be on the list as well. Are you interested in having a snake that’s going to live for the next fifty or sixty years, or are you interested in having a snake that may last for fifteen to twenty years? Snakes are a fairly long living species, and if you aren’t interested in a long term responsibility that comes with having a snake for a pet, then perhaps you should consider getting another type of pet.
Once you have gone over and decided on these basic requirements, then you can tackle the task of figuring out which is the best breed of snake for you. Here are some of the most common popular snakes that make good pets.
The common Garter snake is the kind of snake likes to hang around gardens and yards. Small, and completely harmless, this little snake is one that you might see outside and decide to catch and keep as a pet. While this little snake is not the most favored of pet snakes for snake enthusiasts, it is an ideal snake for people who are looking for a small, easy to care for snake. At around three feet in length fully grown, the Garter snake is usually about two feet shorter than the other pet snakes you’ll find on this list. If a little snake is what you desire, then this little guy is probably the one you would want to find more information about.
The lovely Corn snake is one of the most popular species for snake lovers to keep as a pet. This pretty little snake is the one that people tend to get as their first pet snake, especially if they don’t know much about taking care of a snake. This is because the Corn snake is probably the most docile and domesticated of any species of snake. It is one of the easiest breeds of snakes to care for and the Corn snake is a very adaptable breed as well. It easily adapts to nearly any climate which makes this breed of snake very easy to care for even for beginners. These beautiful snakes usually average around five feet in length when fully grown. While they are a somewhat long breed of snake, they are thin and not heavy at all. They come in a myriad of colors so it should be pretty easy to find one that suits you.
The King snake is another good snake to have as a pet. These snakes are known for eating other snakes, hence the name. If you decide to have more than one snake, it would be a good idea to keep this snake away from the other snakes you may have. In spite of this snake’s tendency to gobble down other snakes, the King snake makes an excellent pet that is fairly easy to take care of. The King snake is only slightly longer than the corn snake but it is also a thin snake and not a big and heavy snake.
Last, but not least, is the Ball python. For people who love having a big snake, this would probably be the breed for them. Running around five feet in length after it’s full grown, this is a fat and heavy snake. This is the type of snake people like to wrap around their shoulders and go for walks in the local park to show off. Of all the fat breeds of snakes available, the ball python is considered to be the best breed for people who are new to having a snake as a pet. The one downside to having this snake as a pet is that it will require more attention than any of the other aforementioned breeds. This is because of this particular breed of snake’s tendency to refuse food for long periods of time. This can cause it to become sick or even die. This isn’t always a big problem, but it does require that the snake be closely observed during it’s feeding times.
All these particular breeds of snakes usually live between 20 and 40 years, and they are not the only snakes that you can keep as pets. However, it takes time to learn to care for a snake. Because of this one factor, starting off with one of these easier to care for snakes is a good idea before moving on to other types of snakes and reptiles.

I used to have a pet snake. It was a corn. Now as I am very busy, a friend of mine is looking after it. Corns are supposed to be the best snake breed to keep as pets. But I swear it was really difficult to take care of it. I was so fond of it. It had really become my best friend and a family member but my corn was a very capricious member and demanded much time to be spent on it.
