If you’re unclear on the definition, a Smart Phone is a cell (mobile) phone which expands on the functionality of the average phone. Where a normal cell phone might give users the ability to take calls, send messages and take photos, a smart phone can often browse the net, edit documents, schedule meetings, read books and even connect up to a computer keyboard or monitor. While different people might find some features more desirable than others, there are some clear leaders within the market that anyone buying a Smart Phone should consider. Read the rest

There are mainly two different types of signals that a satellite dish receives: unencrypted and encrypted. Unencrypted or non-scrambled signals are radio wave frequencies that are fed directly from satellites stationed above the Earth’s atmosphere to a satellite dish and are readily understood by the equipment. This type of signal is referred to as Free-To-Air (FTA) and as what the name suggests, this does not need to be scrambled since it’s free for anyone to use. Most of FTA signals are distributed by local channels providing local updates. Read the rest

Plasma televisions are very high-tech pieces of equipment designed to be lightweight, very thin, and able to produce extremely high-quality images. These screens can also be used as computer monitors. To make such sharp images, plasma television screens are built from many very tiny glass, gas-filled bubbles. Each individual pixel of the screen image contains three color bubbles that produce either red, green, or blue that lights when electric current is run through the matrix. Due to this process by which they create such high-definition images, plasma television screens are more delicate than an ordinary television screen and require extra care when cleaning. Cell phones are great. Everyone has one and it’s hard to imagine how we ever coped without them. One of the few problems associated with cell phones is that much like MP3 players, PDAs and laptops, they are easier to steal and easier to misplace than our less portable belongings. Back before LCD televisions became the norm, buying a TV was usually a much simpler experience that revolved chiefly around the size of the screen and whether or not you got a VHS player bundled with the package. LCD flat panels require slightly more research if you want to get the best deal but once you get through all the new terms and technical jargon it’s actually quite easy to understand. If you’ve managed to hold off buying an LCD until now, here are some things to look out for. Read the rest

Apple’s iPod music player comes with a warranty of a single year, although they luckily last quite a bit longer than that. Recent tests have shown the system should last around three years, but this is highly dependent on the amount you use your player, how often you charge it and how well protected it is from everyday wear and tear. With Apples premier music player not exactly being the cheapest system on the market, what steps can you take to make yours last as long as possible? Read the rest

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve no doubt at least seen some examples of the touch screen cell phones that have come out in the past few years. For me, it’s gotten to the point where I look at a small-screen flip phone in the same way I look at a ’57 Chevy… with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude that things have progressed significantly since then. Whether the touch screen phone completely supplants those with physical keys remains to be seen, but the one thing that’s certain is that this style of phone will be around for a while, at least until something better comes along. Most Americans change their cell phone every 2 years or so. So what happens to the old cell phones? They contain a number of hazardous eco unfriendly materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants and arsenic. So if they are just dumped in the trash, they could become a major pollutant and add to the world’s already growing problem of e-waste. It is estimated that in America alone more than a hundred million cell phones are discarded and these add almost 60000 tons to the toxic waste across the country. There is however a glimmer of hope in the fact that a new generation of nonprofit organizations called electronic recyclers who see opportunity in this, have come into the picture. Read the rest
