Are you longing for an herb garden to keep those wonderfully fresh and tasty herbs at your fingertips, but you live in the big, smelly city in a tiny apartment? Unfortunately, having a traditional garden is not an option. Don’t despair! You can still have all the herbs you want for seasoning food, making teas, or any other herbal concoction you want! If you have a sunny windowsill where plenty of sunlight gets in for at least 8-12 hours a day, you can have an herb garden. To make one, all you need is a window box and a few pots, some gardening soil, seeds, good plant food and water!
If you don’t have a window that gets anywhere near enough sunlight then hydroponics is the way to go my friend!
In fact, I have found that hydroponic gardens are a gardener’s dream for being able to harvest delicious herbs all year round. This is especially so if you happen to live in the big, smelly city in an itty bitty apartment.
There are several companies that offer great hydroponic set ups for a reasonable price. One of my personal favorites is Aerogrow. These incredibly compact, energy efficient, and perfectly complete little hydro systems come with everything you need to start your herb garden the instant you get it. They even have a variety of particular herb garden set ups to choose from! Harvest your indoor herbs with a little bit of love and care. Only clip the outer leaves or sprigs as you need them, while leaving plenty of healthy growth on the plant.
However, if you are lucky enough to live out in the country, have plenty of space, and want to set up a garden outside, then you can grow them traditionally. You will need to decide where you want to set up your herb garden, and what sort of herbs you intend to grow. You will also need garden tools such as a hoe, rake, or garden tiller to till up the soil. It is also a good idea to read some books and search the web for all the information you can find on growing an herb garden.
Buying your plants at a nursery that specializes in herbs is really important. Alternately, you might choose an excellent seed catalog such as Burpee’s to get your seeds. Your selection will be much bigger than it will be at a department store that only carries a few gardening supplies. You can bet that the people running a garden nursery or the folks at Burpee’s will be much more knowledgeable about their product.
Once you have the area that you are going to set up your outdoor herb garden, you need to clean it of any debris and rocks. Then it is time to till the soil and get it ready to set your sprouts or seed. Make sure the soil is in good condition to encourage vigorous and healthy growth. If you have poor soil then you may need to purchase some good quality potting soil to lay down in the area. Try to keep a good amount of compost going to keep adding to the soil to enrich it.
Once you get your herb garden planted, you will need to keep it weeded, watered, and pest free. Lady bugs and praying mantises are a gardener’s best friends. They destroy harmful pests such as aphids, leaf eating worms, etc. These insects can keep your garden free of bugs that would otherwise ruin all your gardening efforts and hard work. These wonderful little insects are usually available at any good gardening nursery, or from a good gardening catalogue.

Oh that sounds like a great idea! I do not have much space at all to grow my herb garden so I will definitely look into those kits.
