There are several different reasons for a doctor to prescribe a woman to take progesterone medication or to use progesterone cream. It is sometimes used to help regulate an irregular menstrual cycle. Doctors often prescribe progesterone products for women who have completed menopause and in some cases even before they have finished going through the process of menopause. There are woman who are starting to see benefits of using progesterone creams to help treat hormonal migraines and their symptoms. Some potentially serious side effects from the use of progesterone can be noted. Although most side effects that are noted are very mild.
There are some common symptoms that are often reported by women who use progesterone prescriptions. Many of these symptoms are annoying but are not serious. Woman quite frequently have cramps that are like those of menstruation. Back pain is reported in many cases as well. Bloating, and in some cases even weight gain, can be seen. Patients that are taking progesterone medications frequently report mild headaches, dizziness or light-headedness.
Some other symptoms that are reported by some women taking progesterone include an increase in breast size or breast pain and tenderness. Woman might have bleeding that is not part of their normal female cycle. Acne is sometimes present in a woman who is using a progesterone product. Depression can occur in some ladies who are using progesterone.
Potentially severe side effects can occur from the use of progesterone medications and creams. As with any medication, there is risk of a severe reaction. A patient should contact a doctor immediately if they have hives, trouble breathing or other signs of an adverse reaction. Although depression can be seen in a few cases of woman using progesterone, a woman should consult her physician if she is experiencing symptoms of depression to determine for proper diagnosis. Any abnormal bleeding should be reported immediately as well.
Some woman do experience headaches when taking progesterone or when they first start to take progesterone. A lady should seek medical attention if she experiences a severe headache or the worst headache of her life to rule out any more serious causes.
The use of progesterone can actually increase the occurrence of blood clots. Women must watch for any signs of a potential blood clots and seek medical attention immediately if any symptoms appear. A woman with a blood clot might notice that one leg is swelling or that her leg has an area that is warm to the touch. A red area or red leg with no other cause could be a sign of a blood clot as well. Blood clots can also lead to strokes or pulmonary embolism. Blood clots are not all that common in terms of progesterone side effects but they can and do occur at times. A woman must be careful when taking progesterone.
In some cases, fibroids in the uterus can result from the use of progesterone. There are other potential side effects which is why a woman must carefully weigh the benefits and any potential risks of progesterone with her doctor. He or she can provide an extensive list of side effects for the patient.

It is important to understand the side effects, but how common are they? And are they outweighed by the pros of using progesterone?

One thing missing from the list of reasons to prescribe progesterone – I’m on it to (hopefully) prevent miscarriage, after I’ve had three of them. From what I understand, there’s some evidence that it might help, convincing evidence that it can’t hurt (the baby, at least!), and no understanding of WHY it might help prevent miscarriage. Does anyone know more about this?
