The antibiotic penicillin is an extremely useful aid in the pharmacopoeia against disease. It can effectively interfere with the cell wall developments of many disease causing bacteria so that its growth will weaken and destroy the bacteria. Penicillin treats a wide range of bacteriological ailments from ear infections to gonorrhea. However helpful penicillin antibiotics are for the recovery of good health in humans, there are some cautions to address and a number of potential negative side effects.
Women must be careful. Penicillin can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. While the antibiotic does not seem to hurt unborn babies, there are some dangers involved in a newborn absorbing it orally through its mother’s milk if they breast feed. One should be aware that even if the disease has abated, you will need to continue the prescription to its completion. Ending the regimen early increases the chance a few bacteria remain which can then develop an immunity to the antibiotic.
Any antibiotic has the potential to cause diarrhea since it will also attack the useful bacteria in the digestive tract. However, the development of severe, watery diarrhea or bloody diarrhea indicates the need to cease using the antibiotic immediately and contact your physician.
Some relatively mild side effects that can commonly occur from the use of penicillin include such difficulties as nausea, stomach pains and the potential for vomiting. Women may experience vaginal itching and may develop an unpleasant discharge as the antibiotic destroys the beneficial bacteria in the body. Headaches can also occur as a side effect of penicillin antibiotics. Some people develop what is described as a swollen, furry or “black” tongue or will develop thrush which manifests as white patches in the throat and mouth.
Development of the more severe side effects of penicillin antibiotics indicates the need to quit the antibiotic and seek professional medical help. These severe side effects include such problems as fever, body and muscle aches, chills or other flu-like symptoms. A general weakness and an increase in the ease of bruising or bleeding also indicate underlying dangers to your health. Dangerous penicillin side effects also include severe skin rashes accompanied by itching and sometimes peeling. This effect can be most pronounced inside the mouth. Mild allergic reaction side effects of penicillin antibiotics can also cause shortness of breath or difficulties with breathing.
Mentally, the side effects of penicillin antibiotics can create a confused state of mind with an increase in agitation and anxiety. Abnormal or out of character thought patterns or behaviors could also indicate a severe allergic reaction to the drug. This can lead to seizures and blackouts or other convulsive reactions.
Normally, people will have no problems with penicillin antibiotic. As with any drug there are those whose system cannot deal with the penicillin antibiotic. While it is usually the most effective antibiotic for most bacterial infections, there are alternatives. Any time you are prescribed penicillin you should self-monitor your body and report any abnormalities to your doctor. There should be no reason to get sicker while trying to get well.

I never realised that there were so many potential side effects. I guess it is always good to know the side effects before taking any drug.

I was freaking out because I had the vaginal itchiness and abnormal discharge I thought it was an infection. But this website was very useful because this all started when I was taking penicillin for a wisdom tooth extraction.

Yogurt. It is suggested after the use of any antibiotic treatment, to eat “good/friendly bacteria (probiotics),” such as lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium, in order to improve/maintain digestive and intestinal health. These good bacteria are present in regular good quality yougurts/dahee and could be taken everyday for a week (about 3/4 cup yougart per day for a week). Good bacteria and good digestive enzymes are also sold in tablets at some pharmacies and health food stores.
Antibiotics not only get rid of bad bacteria, but Good bacteria as well, which can increase the possibility of developing a yeast infection (as sufficient amounts of good bacteria are required to suppress/help stop yeast from taking over).

Thanks! This helped a lot. I felt terrible every time I’d take it. It made me start my period even I took my pill! It made me so sick! I was given it because I got my wisdom teeth out. I had no appetite from it, and I lost 4 1/2 lbs in a matter of 3 days. With it one smell of food disgusted me! Finally last night, it took its BIG toll on me, and I almost fainted. I thought I was gonna die! I still feel a bit awful. :/

Thank you praky.
That was what I was thinking about. I take penicillin. For long stretches of time. For a Lyme disease type thing. That won’t go away. Anyway, I don’t eat yogurt because I have trouble digesting yogurt. Lactate pills help but not enough. I go off of penicillin. But then I get very sick again. The penicillin works great. But I do worry about not having good digestion. I guess I could look into the tablets. I just think that might throw something else off. I don’t need something to help that. And on and on and on. Anyway, thanks for the information. Thank God for the penicillin.

Jackie & Dee, the vaginal itching etc *is* thrush, antibiotics kill of the good bacteria that keep the thrush yeast at bay. Just treat it as you would normally treat thrush and it wil go away.

I had to take Penicillin because of my wisdom teeth being pulled. My doctor gave me 500mgs 4 times a day for 7 days!!! This dosage made me extremely sick, nausea, headaches, vomiting, confusion, and also dizziness. I called the doctor to say I think I’m having a reaction to the med, and he said. “O, well you weren’t supposed to take the.. It was just a precautionary measure.” YEAH RIGHT! be careful they don’t over-prescribe you.
